Pet Food Recall Expands

Last week, Menu Foods and it’s affliated pet food brands announced their dog and cat food had been contaminated, first they thought by rat poison, now they’re saying it was a chemical called Melamine, which somehow found its way into the wheat gluten ingredient of the foods. The Melamine is said to be causing liver failure in cats and dogs, which either kills them, or causes pet owners to put their animals "to sleep" because of expensive treatments. Only certain brands are affected, but many brands are included.

Now, Del Monte Pet Products is recalling it’s dog and cat food due to the same problem. "The company says it is recalling the food after learning that the wheat gluten supplied to it from a Chinese plant contained melamine." "It is not immediately clear if the recall extends to products sold in Canada." source: Yahoo News.

"The affected brands are                                                                                                                                                                                                                  Jerky Treats Beef Flavor Dog Snacks                                                                                                                                                                                            Gravy Train Beef Sticks Dog Snacks                                                                                                                                                                                            Pounce Meaty Morsels Moist Chicken Flavor Cat Treats.

The company says two other products sold under private labels also are affected:                                                                                                                        Ol’ Roy Beef Flavor Jerky Strips Dog Treats and Ol’ Roy Beef Flavor Snack Stick Dog Treats.

Other brands affected:

Alpo Prime Cuts in Gravy (Nestle Purina PetCare Co.) wet dog food with specific date codes.

Purina said a limited amount of the food contained a contaminated wheat gluten from China.

I know there’s no point in getting all stressed out and this, but in my mind, do we not all call our dogs and cats members of our families?! I know that fact isn’t legally binding, which is likely why this isn’t Front Page news and being given the focus it absolutely deserves! If it were human beings that were being poisoned, or God forbid, killed, society would be in an uproar! Charges would be brought down on the people and companies responsible, maybe even punishments!! However, since it’s only happening to our beloved cats and dogs (sarcasm), it’s not being taken as seriously. Hell, the recall isn’t even MANDATORY, it’s VOLUNTARY. I was at Sobeys the other day getting pet food for our cat, Sandy (who’s doing fine). The brands on the shelf didn’t even display a warning, instead there were half off sales! WTF!! Granted, there are Class-Action Lawsuits happening, and I hope to God that the companies and people responsible are held accountable for their actions!!
